I'm trying to think of the appropriate addage here or a phrase that describes being adaptive to life's twists and turns. "Don't count your chickens before they're hatched," maybe? Or, how about "Never say Never?...
Well, you can read about our recent AMT involvement with a charitable event, the Hoka Hey, in a column on this page. It was through working with my friend and the owner of Seals Custom Fabrication, Lincoln Seals, that I came to learn about this event and the various charities that it supports.
Each rider in the Hoka Hey decides what charity they want to support, receiving donations from friends, family, and businesses, and riding thousands of miles through all kinds of weather to reach their final destination. To complete a ride of such magnitude, they face physical and mental challenges. In servicing a few of these weary travelers motorcycles, replacing tires, brake pads, and in one case, performing some body and electrical work, I was inspired by the riders' and their selfless determination to raise money for good causes.
So, that got me to thinking how much I enjoy the comraderie of motorcycle riders and the bonds that make the motorcycle community such a close knit family. Motorcyclists are some of the most kind and considerate folks to be found, willing to help others in need and to lend a hand when things go awry. It's in this vain of thinking, what it's meant to me personally to be able to help others, renew worn motorcycle components, and put riders safely back on the road, That also has caused me to rethink retirement from "busting rubber donuts," as I sometimes refer to my work.
This business doesn't make a ton of cash. it's difficult to keep up with supplying the right tires, brakes, chains, sprockets and the like, for the myriad of motorcycles we work on. Some folks think we charge too much for our services, while other say we don't charge enough. Sometimes the business takes away free time for the things my wife and I like to do, but for me personally, it gives me a number of benefits. In running this business I have had the opportunity to meet interesting folks from all around the country AND the world!
I think as we age into our "golden years," it's sometimes easy to feel relegated toward insignificance, without purpose, or a cause. AMT has certainly provided a sense of significance through supporting the motorcycling communtiy, a purpose in helping folks, and by providing riders a safer motorcycling experience.
Keeping the doors open isn't without challenges. Maintaining sufficient inventory to handle emergent rider needs for a wide variety of motorcycle styles and brands, purchasing shop supplies, pay Quickbooks and accounting fees, and keeping the books, are just a few of the and expenses we incur and headaches we face.
All that said, I've just renewed our annual $600 Quickbooks subscription, so let's see what the rest of 2024 and 2025 brings.

Hoka What? I'd never heard of such a ride, but...
In anticipation of the arrival of a Hoka Hey rider/participant, Paul Tong, was needing new tires and brake pads, and at arounnd 9pm, we opened our shop doors.
In preparation for the rider's arrival, Lincoln Seals of Seals Custom Fabrication LLC had picked up the rider's tires in Missoula, along with a Subway sandwich. At around 9:30pm a very weary tall man rolled in on his Harley PanAmerica and we set to work on bringing both the rider and the bike back into form.
As I concentrated on mounting some new Michelins on the Harley, Lincoln and his son worked to refresh brake pads. Within about 1 1/2 hours we had the bike ready to go, and amazingly to me, he was setting off for a night time Canadian border crossing.
Anyone participating in this event needs a very strong will and lots of determination to execute the ride within the allotted time and has to have the discipline to adhere to the strict rules of travel. As an example, those rules require that the rider sleeps next to his/her machine within reaching distance. This 10,000 mile ride isn't for the casual rider or the faint of heart!
We wish this rider safe travels on his way from Florida to Homer Alaska.

Since the AK trip has so far not worked out, we've been scheming for a shorter getaway that will cover some great Montana and Wyoming roads.
We've hatched a plan to do a ride from the Flathead Valley to Yellowstone, Red Lodge, Beartooth Pass, and Cody, WY.
AMT will be closing for a few days in September. Stay tuned for more information.
Update: AMT will be cloased for our mini-epic ride from Sept 9 through Sept 13. Ride On!
